Why is it that you feel like a brand new person when you are on vacation, happy and carefree, but feel like death the other 50 weeks of the year? Because when you are on vacation you let yourself RELAX, LAUGH, PLAY, AND FEEL PLEASURE…not stress.
The American Institute of Stress states “In the short term, stress can leave us anxious, tearful and struggling to sleep. But over time, continuously feeling frazzled could trigger heart attacks, strokes, and even suicidal thoughts”. YIKES! Staying in a state of stress vs pleasure can lead to death.
Where does most modern-day stress come from? Our jobs and families. Many people are overworking themselves at their jobs to support themselves and their families. And many people feel undervalued and underappreciated in both places, but see no way out.
To contend with this reality, I tell my clients to create a pleasure practice. What is a pleasure practice? I define it as action steps created to provide more joy into my life on a daily basis that keeps stress levels down and money up.
But…how? I made a decision to do 1 pleasurable thing a day, to slow down and enjoy that specific thing.
It’s not rocket science, but it works. For example, sometimes I’ll dress up for no reason other than the fact that I want to wear a ball gown for the first half of my day while I’m in meetings. Other days I will take time to listen to an interesting podcast on my commute and really absorb myself in the topic. Other days I want to sweat it out with a workout or eat something really delicious and homemade with a friend. The point is simply to seek out PLEASURE daily and make that a habit.
Since I’ve created my pleasure practice, I’ve become happier, my business is thriving, my work-life balance is at an all-time high, my confidence in myself and my abilities has exploded, and I’m making more money. YAY!
Now it’s your turn.
